Air pollution will be associated with 4,200 premature deaths per year in Portugal, according to an alert launched by two environmental defense associations. These organizations warned today that this is a concerning reality for Portuguese public health.

Nitrogen dioxide, a pollutant mainly emitted by fuel-powered automobiles, was identified as a critical pollutant in urban areas of the country. This gas represents a significant risk to the health of the population living in cities.
