Migrant Landing at Meco? GNR Does Not Confirm Illegal Immigration Case After Day of Searches

Euronews Portugal7 September 2026 at 09:32

Authorities launched a search operation on Sunday in the municipality of Sesimbra, after a fisherman alerted them to the alleged arrival of illegal migrants on a beach in the region. The report described individuals landing on a beach in the municipality of Sesimbra.

The GNR went to the location to verify the situation but was unable to confirm the presence of any migrants. The soldiers found no evidence of an illegal landing of people having occurred.

The authorities decided to link the case to the drug trafficking phenomenon, changing the initial line of investigation. This connection arises in a context where the smuggling of illicit substances through maritime routes has been a growing concern for security forces in the coastal area.

The case remains without official confirmation regarding the nature of the incident, with the possibility still open that it may have been a false alarm or a different criminal activity from what was initially suspected.
