British parachutist Holly Wiffen, 35, survived a fall of approximately 3,650 meters after being accidentally hit by another parachutist during a group jump at Langar airfield, near Nottingham, England, on August 7. The accident occurred during a modality known as "tracking," in which experienced parachutists perform horizontal freefall to gain speed.
Holly was positioned with the group when another participant apparently miscalculated their movement and hit her. Unconscious and with no control over her own body, she plummeted at speeds that reached approximately 240 km/h until hitting a tree, which cushioned the impact and possibly saved her life.
The parachutist suffered only two fractures in her spine as a result of the fall of approximately 3,000 meters, which was considered surprising given the circumstances of the accident. The impact with the tree was fundamental in reducing the severity of the injuries.
