From "idiots or traitors" to a "great celebration of democracy": reactions to the German far-right victory

SIC Notícias7 September 2026 at 06:30

The victory of the German far-right in Saxony-Anhalt provoked polarized reactions, from severe criticism such as "idiots or traitors" to celebrations calling it "a great celebration of democracy". This divergence of opinions reflects the deep division existing in German society regarding the AfD party.

According to preliminary results released by public television broadcasters ARD and ZDF, the AfD achieved almost 44% of the votes in Saxony-Anhalt, consolidating this region as one of its main strongholds in the former East Germany. This result places the party significantly ahead of the CDU, which obtained less than 18% of the votes in the same election.
