Polytechnic University of Beja celebrates partnership with Turismo de Portugal

Correio Alentejo7 September 2026 at 01:00

The Polytechnic University of Beja and Turismo de Portugal signed a cooperation protocol for the creation of the Higher Professional Technical Course in Border Tourism and Eurocity. The course starts in the 2026-2027 academic year and will operate at the Hotel and Tourism School of Vila Real de Santo António, located in the cross-border territory of the Eurocity Guadiana.

The Eurocity Guadiana integrates the Algarve municipalities of Vila Real de Santo António, Castro Marim, Alcoutim and Tavira, as well as the Alentejo municipalities of Mértola, Serpa, Moura and Barrancos. The partnership with Turismo de Portugal is considered particularly relevant as it provides a training framework directly related to one of the main economic activities of the region.

The Beja institution states that the creation of the course represents a commitment to bringing higher education closer to the needs of the territory and the opportunities arising from its strategic location on the border. The training of specialized professionals in border tourism and in Eurocity contexts can contribute significantly to the enhancement and development of the region.

UPBeja also highlights that the new course represents a strengthening of higher education provision in the territory and a commitment to qualifying professionals for a region where tourism, cross-border economic activity and cooperation between Portugal and Spain assume strategic importance.

In testimony, 'Pharaoh of Bitcoin' says he is a 'whale' and admits to having manipulated the cryptocurrency market

In unprecedented court testimonies, Glaidson Acácio dos Santos, the "Pharaoh of bitcoins," and his wife Mirelis Yoseline Diaz Zerpa revealed details of the scheme that, according to authorities, moved more than R$ 38 billion and may have left 77,000 victims. On the occasion, Glaidson admitted to being a cryptocurrency "whale" — a term used for investors with enough volume to influence market prices — and confirmed he could manipulate other cryptocurrencies by contacting other "whales." The criminal trial, which will determine if the couple committed crimes against the financial system, is in the final stretch, but one of the biggest mysteries remains unsolved: the total value in the Pharaoh's crypto wallet.

EssilorLuxottica heir calls for new strategy

Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio, son of EssilorLuxottica's founder, publicly advocated for a new strategy for the eyewear group after losing more than half its market value. Del Vecchio stepped down in August from management positions at the owner of Ray-Ban and Oakley brands, following reports of tensions with CEO Francesco Milleri. He remains an investor through holding company Delfin, which controls 32.4% of EssilorLuxottica, viewing the business as the main industrial investment and family legacy. Delfin also holds stakes in Italian banks, including 17.5% of Monte dei Paschi di Siena, and Del Vecchio criticized the alleged lack of transparency in the holding's board of directors.

Unique passes, public policies and railways

The article analyses how the energy transition and the need to decarbonise transport led several European countries to implement national single passes that allow unlimited travel on different modes of public transport. It highlights the case of the Austrian Klimaticket (annual pass) and the German Deutschlandticket (monthly pass), which demonstrated significant impacts on mobility pattern changes, with many users switching from cars to trains. Other countries such as Hungary, Spain and France followed similar examples. The article emphasises that the success of these passes depends on stable public funding models, investments in infrastructure and transport service capacity, being considered essential instruments in the European energy transition and territorial sustainability agenda.
