Avante!: If PS makes budget viable, it gives the Government space to "escalate the attack" – PCP

SAPO Notícias6 September 2026 at 19:26

The Secretary-General of the PCP, Paulo Raimundo, today considered that if the PS makes the next State Budget viable, it will be giving the Government conditions to "escalate the attack" against workers and the population. In his speech, Raimundo warned that this situation also frees Chega from having to take on the responsibility for that attack.

This position of the communist leader comes in the context of a new political cycle in Portugal, where the making viable of a State Budget by the PS would be decisive for governmental stability. The PCP believes the PS should not facilitate that viability, thus avoiding giving more room for maneuver to the executive.

Paulo Raimundo's statement fits within a PCP strategy of warning about the dangers of a Budget that, in the party's view, harms workers' interests. The party maintains its critical position regarding Government policies and the eventual complicity of the PS in their continuation.

AfD sweeps in Saxony-Anhalt, but may be left out of Government

The German far-right (AfD) achieved its best ever result in a German state in Saxony-Anhalt, with around 44% of the votes, more than doubling the CDU's 18.5%. However, despite the overwhelming victory, the AfD may be excluded from regional government, as the remaining parties refuse to form a coalition with the far-right, leaving the formation of the next executive uncertain.
