AfD sweeps in Saxony-Anhalt, but may be left out of Government

ZAP Notícias6 September 2026 at 23:30

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) achieved its best ever regional result in Saxony-Anhalt's regional elections, leaving the CDU far behind. Projections from ARD and ZDF gave the AfD between 44% and 44.5% of the votes, against only 18.5% for the CDU, the chancellor's party. The AfD more than doubled the CDU's results in these elections.

However, despite the expressive victory, the AfD may be left out of Government. The far-right needs 42 deputies to achieve an absolute majority, and even if it managed that number, the other German parties refuse to govern with the far-right party.

Saxony-Anhalt is a state in eastern Germany, a region where the AfD has traditionally achieved its best electoral results. This regional election serves as an important indicator for the upcoming federal elections in the country.
