Von der Leyen was received at the airport by the Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, and the President of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen. The visit marks a gesture of support from the European Union to Greenland and Denmark in the face of external threats.
The announced package of measures aims to reinforce the European presence and the autonomy of Greenland. The measures are expected to include economic support, cooperation on critical raw materials and greater cooperation on defence and security matters.
Von der Leyen's trip to Greenland follows the visit of the Danish Prime Minister to the region last week, where he signed cooperation agreements with local authorities.
