Sorry for not cleaning? Modern cleaning products can pollute your home like the traffic on your street

Scented cleaning products can contribute to the formation of an invisible form of indoor air pollution, according to a study presented last week at the American Chemical Society. The research examined how fragrance compounds react with ozone present in the air and give rise to potentially inhalable nanoparticles.

Researchers tested conventional products and botanical-based disinfectants in controlled residential environments, including an experimental house equipped with sensors capable of measuring air quality. During cleaning activities, such as mopping floors, spraying countertops, or cleaning surfaces, rapid increases in ultrafine particle concentrations were recorded.

The study suggests that this indoor pollution may be comparable to levels found in areas with heavy motor traffic. Ultrafine particles, due to their tiny size, can penetrate deep into the lungs and pose risks to the respiratory health of residents.

Bumblebees were already among the main pollinators of linden trees 24 million years ago

Researchers have discovered that bumblebees were already the main pollinators of linden trees approximately 24 million years ago, during the Cenozoic. The flowers of these trees emit an intense fragrance that especially attracts bees and bumblebees, and this mutualistic relationship between insects and plants of the genus Tilia has remained virtually unchanged over millions of years.
