The secretary-general of the Socialist Party (PS), José Luís Carneiro, refused to reveal what the party's decision will be on the motion of censure presented by Chega, but reaffirmed that PS will guarantee the country's political stability. His statements were made to journalists on the sidelines of a visit to the São Mateus Fair, in Viseu, which concluded its 634th edition.
José Luís Carneiro accused the parties that presented the motion of censure of wanting to provoke a political crisis, noting that PS was responsible for avoiding a similar crisis in 2025, when it prevented the country from going to elections during the period of the presidential elections and the response to the storms. The socialist leader emphasized that "it is not because of PS that there will be a political crisis" nor that the country will be "launched into political chaos at such a special time in world life."
The secretary-general said he is still listening to the party's comrades, from the secretariat, the national political commission and the members of the political commission, stating that he will only make a definitive decision by Tuesday.
Regarding the Chega leader, José Luís Carneiro criticized him for knowing "how to occupy the media space" through attacks on institutions and the prestige of democracy, stating that PS seeks "to safeguard institutions, modernize, improve and respond to people's needs." The socialist also pointed out serious failures in health, education, the lack of teachers and the cost of living, characterizing these issues as being avoided in public debate due to what he called "populisms and distraction maneuvers."
