Farmers concerned about production costs and fuel prices

Diário de Viseu6 September 2026 at 16:00

Farmers in Portugal are expressing growing concern about the increasing production costs and fuel prices, according to information released by an agricultural sector association. This concern arises in a context of financial difficulties faced by national producers.

The association specifically highlighted the production costs of rainfed cereals, arguing that "producing rainfed cereal has a cost that cannot continue to be ignored." This statement reflects the difficult economic situation experienced by many farmers who depend on this type of crop.

Fuel costs represent one of the main concerns, directly affecting the profitability of agricultural holdings. The increase in these costs has an impact throughout the entire production chain, from land preparation operations to harvesting.

The farmers' representative entity calls for greater attention from authorities to this situation, highlighting that many producers face difficulties in maintaining the economic activity of their farms under current market conditions.
