Guimarães remembered the War Godmothers through letters and testimonies

Braga TV6 September 2026 at 13:44

The Military Museum – Casa do Lanceiro, in Azurém, Guimarães, received the initiative "Letters from Overseas – Memory, Affection and Identity", dedicated to the so-called war godmothers from Guimarães and the epistolary relationship they maintained with Portuguese military personnel during the Overseas War.

The central moment of the initiative was the presentation of the mini-documentary "War Godmothers from Guimarães", which sought to document and preserve the memory of these women and the correspondence they exchanged with the mobilized military personnel.

The War Godmothers were women who established correspondence relationships with Portuguese soldiers during the Portuguese colonial conflict, creating bonds of support and affection at a distance with the military personnel deployed to the former colonies.

The initiative thus aimed to preserve and share this part of the history of Guimarães and the Overseas War, using the letters and testimonies that document these epistolary relationships between the godmothers and the soldiers.
