Lionel Mpasi, goalkeeper for the Democratic Republic of Congo and standout at the 2026 World Cup, suffered an injury during his team Le Havre's match against Brest in the French league last Saturday. The 32-year-old player left the field with a suspected injury to his right Achilles tendon.
The incident occurred in stoppage time, shortly after Mpasi made a great save. He managed to avoid being beaten and sent the ball out for a corner, but landed awkwardly and immediately signaled to his right leg, showing significant pain. A fan captured on video part of the play and the medical treatment given to the goalkeeper.
Le Havre ended up losing the match 2-1 to Brest. Mpasi now awaits the results of examinations to determine the exact severity of the injury, but the prognosis is not favorable. Coach Didier Digard lamented the situation after the match, saying the situation does not look good and that the goalkeeper will likely be out for a long period.
