The National Republican Guard carried out an inspection operation in the Algarve aimed at combating fuel smuggling associated with drug trafficking. As part of this action, nineteen people were arrested and more than 500 fuel canisters were seized.

The so-called narco-boats, vessels used in transporting drugs to Portugal, require thousands of liters of fuel due to the high-powered engines they have.

To ensure the refueling of these vessels, criminal organizations rely on dedicated ground teams for logistical support, ensuring the fuel supply necessary for trafficking operations.

The operation in the Algarve thus aims to dismantle this land-based support network that allows narco-boats to operate continuously in transporting drugs to Portuguese territory.
