Fuel prices – Week of September 7 to 13, 2026

Jornal de Mafra6 September 2026 at 12:00

From September 7, 2026, fuel prices in Portugal are expected to undergo significant changes, with increases in both petrol and diesel. According to industry sources, petrol is expected to rise by about 12 cents per liter and diesel by about 15 cents per liter. On Friday, September 4, the average price of diesel was 2.019 euros per liter and petrol was 2.022 euros per liter.

If the forecasts are confirmed, the average price of diesel will rise to 2.169 euros per liter, while petrol will reach 2.142 euros per liter. However, some fuel stations may show less significant price variations, as the sector is liberalized and each station sets its own pricing policy.

The price increase is directly related to the current war context in the Middle East. The United States, Israel and Iran are involved in military attacks in the region, which caused the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20% of world oil and natural gas trade passes.

This conflict is causing strong fluctuations in fuel prices throughout Europe, naturally also affecting Portugal. The situation in the Middle East continues to be the main cause of variations in global energy markets.

Government extends deadline until end of year to conclude TAP privatization

The Portuguese Government extended until December 31, 2026 the deadline for concluding the TAP privatization process, through Council of Ministers resolution no. 176-A/2026. The decision aims to allow three weeks of final negotiations with the two bidders who submitted binding offers — Air France-KLM and Lufthansa — for the purchase of 44.9% of the airline. The Minister of the Presidency, Leitão Amaro, explained that the proposals are globally very close, justifying an additional negotiation effort to obtain improved proposals before selecting a single bidder. The process also includes formal steps such as approval by the Council of Ministers and authorization from European competition authorities. The total sale can reach 49.9% of the capital, with 5% reserved for workers.
