Eight men were arrested on Friday dawn in the municipality of Loulé on suspicion of fuel smuggling. The arrest was carried out by the Criminal Investigation Unit of Loulé of the GNR, during a policing action after military personnel detected suspicious movements related to the refueling and logistical support of a vessel.
Following the police investigations, the suspects were intercepted near a light goods vehicle. A total of 150 jerry cans with fuel were seized, each with a capacity of 25 liters, in addition to the vehicle itself.
The GNR also reported that two surveillance cameras, a mobile phone and 100 euros were seized. The eight arrested will be brought before the Judicial Court of Loulé for the application of precautionary measures.
The operation had the support of the territorial sub-detachment of Quarteira, the territorial post of Vilamoura and the Intervention Detachment of Faro.
