Researchers from the University of Coimbra achieved success in a genetic editing test for Machado-Joseph disease, a rare and hereditary neurodegenerative condition. The new data may contribute to the development of new therapeutic approaches for this disease.
Machado-Joseph disease affects the brain and motor abilities, causing lack of coordination of voluntary muscle movements, loss of balance, speech problems, swallowing, eye movements and sleep issues. These characteristics make the disease similar to Parkinson's in some aspects.
The disease has a particularly high prevalence in the Azores, especially on the island of Flores, where it affects a significant number of the local population. This geographical particularity makes the study and treatment of the condition especially relevant for that Portuguese region.
