Nepal suffered one of the most dramatic hydrogeological and glacial disasters of 2026 on August 26. A high-altitude glacier located at more than 5,000 meters collapsed, triggering a huge ice and rock avalanche that swept through the valley and caused a major sudden flood. Contrary to some initial reports, there is no evidence that a pre-existing glacial lake or an artificial reservoir triggered the event.
The consequences were devastating for villages, tourists, mountaineers, downstream hydroelectric power plants and, above all, for the local population. The disaster serves as another warning about the dangers of the climate crisis, as the retreat of glaciers is transforming landscapes and increasing the risk of catastrophic events.
A glaciologist from the University of Bristol presents initial hypotheses about the role of global warming in this type of disaster. The specialist warns about the impact of climate change on glacial disasters in the region between Nepal and Tibet, where the collapse of high mountain glaciers represents a growing threat.
