NASA/ESA's Hubble Space Telescope has discovered a giant atmospheric wave shaped like a decagon, or ten-sided figure, encircling Saturn's south pole. This structure is evolving and represents the first time a large regular-sided jet pattern has been observed in the planet's southern hemisphere.
The formation bears a remarkable resemblance to Saturn's famous north pole hexagon, which is one of the most iconic atmospheric features in the solar system. However, scientists indicate that the new structure is distinctly different from the hexagon.
This discovery suggests that researchers may be witnessing the development of a new atmospheric phenomenon on this gas giant. The analysis was made possible by combining several years of Hubble observations dating back to 2023.
