A 22-year-old man identified as Nathaniel Michael Carrasco was arrested in San Antonio, Texas, after the FBI alerted local authorities about messages he allegedly sent to an Anthropic artificial intelligence chatbot called Claude. Authorities were notified about the threats after the suspect's conversations were analyzed.
According to arrest documents cited by the San Antonio Express-News and News4 San Antonio outlets, Carrasco allegedly made the queries on August 11. In the messages investigated, he asked to find images of dead and bloody children.
In other conversations, the man described his plan to obtain a weapon and attack Serna Elementary School, an elementary school near his home. The suspect stated: "I'm going to get a gun as soon as I can and, when Serna Elementa...", according to excerpts mentioned in the article.
The case raises questions about the role of AI chatbots in detecting threats and communicating suspicious information to the relevant authorities to prevent acts of violence.
