The winning goal for the tricolor was scored by Lucho Acosta. The result represented revenge for Fluminense, which had been eliminated by Vasco exactly one month before, in the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil.
With the victory, Fluminense moved up from sixth to fourth place in the championship, reaching 45 points, the same points as Athletico-PR, but behind the Paraná team due to having fewer wins (13 against 11). Vasco, meanwhile, continues in 17th place, with only 25 points.
Vasco took the field with a high-pressing strategy, which made it difficult for Fluminense to play the ball out from the back and resulted in crossmastino dominance in the physical battles. The Vasco team stole several balls and created goal threats, such as a left-footed shot by Andrés Gómez, who had scored two goals against Vitória in the Copa do Brasil.
