Two Hellenic Air Force pilots died on Saturday after the F-4E Phantom II fighter jet they were in crashed during a demonstration at the "Athos Flying Week" at Tanagra air base, about 60 kilometers north of Athens. The accident occurred around 2:55 PM local time, a few minutes after the demonstration began, in front of thousands of spectators.
The aircraft, belonging to the 338th Squadron, lost altitude during a right turn and crashed in a rural area near the base. Part of the wreckage hit an industrial facility, causing a fire that spread through the vegetation in the area.
Emergency teams were mobilized to fight the flames and locate the crew members. According to the Hellenic Air Force, the two military personnel were found unconscious and their deaths were later confirmed. The pilots were a captain and another military member, as indicated by the Hellenic Air Force.
