Portuguese medalists at the Ibero-American Biology Olympiad

Portuguese students won medals at the 19th Ibero-American Biology Olympiad. Afonso Veiga, from Colégio Marista de Carcavelos, and Caetana Marques, from Escola Secundária Rainha Dona Leonor in Lisbon, received silver medals. Camila Catarino, from Escola Secundária Lima de Faria in Cantanhede, obtained the bronze medal, while Diana Reis, from Escola Secundária Madeira Torres in Torres Vedras, was awarded a merit diploma.

The Order of Biologists congratulated the results, stating that they confirm the quality of the Portuguese representation in a competition that brings together students from various Ibero-American countries and assesses scientific knowledge, analytical capacity and practical skills in Biology.

In July of this year, Portugal had already achieved positive results at the 37th International Biology Olympiad, held in Vilnius, Lithuania. Kaixin Cheng and Daniel Marques brought back bronze medals, while Daniel Rosa Martins and Francisco Antunes received merit certificates.

Maria de Jesus Fernandes, president of the Order of Biologists, considered that the results reflect talent, dedication and scientific capacity, but also the continued work of schools, teachers, families and institutions. The Portuguese Biology Olympiads are promoted by the Order of Biologists, with funding from EduQA, I.P., and support from Ciência Viva, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian and the Municipality of Oeiras. The next International Biology Olympiad will take place in Warsaw, Poland, in July 2027.
