Initial agreement reached at UN on autonomous weapons

SAPO Notícias5 September 2026 at 18:00

Almost 130 countries reached today an initial agreement at the United Nations on a text that defines autonomous weapons. This agreement represents a first step before possible negotiations for an international treaty on the matter.

The discussions on autonomous weapons at the UN have been ongoing for several years, and this consensual definition marks significant progress in the international diplomatic process.

The agreed text establishes for the first time a common definition of what are considered autonomous weapons, facilitating future negotiations between member countries.

The next step will be to assess whether the political conditions are in place to move forward with formal negotiations with the aim of creating a binding international treaty.
