Towels may appear clean after use, but the moisture accumulated between uses creates favourable conditions for the proliferation of microorganisms and the appearance of odours. According to the Welsh company Cardiff Perfections Launderette, cited by the Express, bath towels should generally be washed after three or four uses. This interval can be shortened when the bathroom is poorly ventilated, the towel takes a long time to dry, or the weather is hot and humid. Between uses, the towel should be left completely spread out in a well-ventilated area, as leaving it folded, bunched up, or hung in a space without air circulation prolongs moisture and can accelerate the appearance of mould and unpleasant odours.
Hand towels are used more frequently and may be shared by several people, so they should be washed every two to three days, increasing the frequency when someone at home is ill. As for the small towels used directly on the face, they should be washed after each use, given that contact with oiliness, cosmetic products, and skin residues makes reuse without washing inadvisable.
The cleaning company recommends avoiding the use of fabric softener on towels, as this product can leave a layer on the fabric fibres and gradually reduce the ability to absorb water. Towels can be washed at between 40 and 60 °C, provided the temperature is allowed by the label, and it is equally important to follow the recommended amount of detergent to avoid residue on the fibres. After washing, they should dry completely before being folded and stored, in order to preserve absorbency, softness, and to avoid the musty smell for longer.
