Portimonense Sporting Clube announced yesterday the preventive and immediate suspension of the players targeted by suspicions of involvement in illegal betting during the 2025/26 season. The Algarve club, which currently plays in the First District Division of the Algarve Football Association, expressed its "deepest displeasure, sadness and total repudiation" regarding the suspicions.

According to the newspaper Record, the Disciplinary Board of the Portuguese Football Federation proceeded with a disciplinary process covering 26 people suspected of involvement in sports betting. Portimonense did not reveal how many players are directly involved in the process.

The facts under investigation refer to the 2025/26 season, in which Portimonense finished Series D of the Championship of Portugal in 12th place and ended up being relegated. The preventive suspension of the players covered by the suspicions who are still at the club takes immediate effect and remains in place until the total clarification of the process.

In addition to the suspensions, Portimonense stated that all internal and disciplinary proceedings have already been initiated to investigate the facts and the respective individual responsibilities. The club guaranteed that it will act "relentlessly and with the utmost rigor" and that it will provide all assistance and collaboration to the competent authorities.
