Parreira receives medical discharge after 80 days hospitalized with lung problems

cbn5 September 2026 at 14:41

Former Brazilian National Team coach Carlos Alberto Parreira, 83 years old, received medical discharge this Saturday (5), after spending 80 days hospitalized at Hospital Samaritano Barra, in the Southwest Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Parreira was admitted on June 16 with a case of lung inflammation.

During hospitalization, Parreira's condition evolved into acute respiratory failure, probably caused by drug-induced lung toxicity. The former coach needed to undergo invasive mechanical ventilation, hemodialysis, and other procedures. In the first weeks, he showed improvement and was able to breathe without machines and respond to the medical team's stimuli.

However, his health condition worsened again in late June and subsequently in early July, when a tracheostomy became necessary and hemodialysis had to be started. After further complications, Parreira began showing positive progress. On July 27, he left the ICU and was transferred to the semi-intensive care unit, when he was lucid and in progressive recovery.
