Since October 2016, the Alemão Cable Car has been out of service due to lack of maintenance during the state's financial crisis. Starting next week, the support cables for the gondolas will begin to be replaced. After a decade of promises and announcements, the new expected date for completion of the recovery work is February.
Once the cable replacement is finished, load and no-load tests will be conducted until the service is handed over to the state Transportation Secretary, scheduled for June of next year. However, there is no forecast for when residents will be able to use the transportation again.
The system was inaugurated in July 2011 as a major project for the city and operated for only five years and three months before being halted. Even without new setbacks, the gondolas will have spent more time out of service than in operation.
