"Fatima is a manifestation of the Gospel"

Jornal da Madeira5 September 2026 at 13:53

Over a century after the apparitions of Fatima, the Message of Fatima continues to challenge contemporary man. In a time marked by wars, insecurity, individualism, and a profound spiritual crisis in the West, economist and professor João César das Neves considers that it is precisely in this context that the message transmitted by Our Lady to the Shepherd Children gains new relevance.

In an interview with Jornal da Madeira, the author of "The Century of Fatima" warns against the risk of looking at Fatima only in search of prophecies or future events, forgetting what he considers essential: prayer, sacrifice, and amendment of life. For João César das Neves, Fatima's answer to the difficult times we live in lies in the conversion of the heart and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, with the Rosary and the First Saturdays holding a particular place.

The professor was the speaker at the fifth and final conference on the theme "The relevance of the Message of Fatima," part of a cycle dedicated to the Reparative Devotion of the First Saturdays, promoted by the Cathedral of Funchal. In the interview, he states that, despite the changes that have occurred over the last hundred years, the message has not lost its relevance, because it continues to speak to the human heart and point to Christ. "Fatima is a manifestation of the Gospel for our time," he concludes.
