"It is not credible that Ukraine can recover its entire territory", highlighted Vasco Rato on peace talks

Now5 September 2026 at 13:30

International relations professor Vasco Rato considered that it is not credible that Ukraine can recover its entire territory, arguing that any peace agreement will have to involve mutual concessions between the parties involved in the conflict.

Rato was commenting on the possibility of a visit by American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Kyiv and Moscow, as part of possible negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.

The specialist emphasized that, to achieve a lasting compromise, both Ukraine and Russia will need to make concessions, rejecting the idea that a total victory for either side is realistic or sustainable in the long term.
