Red Cross describes the most difficult hours after the arrival of the cayuco: "Many people are missing here"
"Are you traveling with any family members?" This question is part of the routine for Red Cross teams attending to migrants when they set foot on land. Name, age, nationality, and little else. If family members are traveling among the newly arrived, volunteers try to identify them to keep them together. On Thursday, at the Arguineguín dock, that seemingly routine question began to reveal the magnitude of the tragedy. "One person is missing," one person responded. "Four are missing from me," another warned. "That's when the alarm sounds and we say: many people are missing here," reports José Antonio Rodríguez Verona, a member of the First Emergency Response Team for the Immigrant Population who participated in the operation deployed at the dock.
