US envoys arrive in Moscow for peace talks

US envoys arrive in Moscow for Russia-Ukraine peace negotiations

US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Moscow to mediate peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, aiming to revive negotiation efforts to end the Russian full-scale invasion that began in February 2022. The envoys were met at the airport by Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev, according to the Tass news agency. The visit comes amid intensified aerial attacks from both sides of the conflict. The last known visit by Witkoff and Kushner to Moscow was in January 2026, when they met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he expected the envoys in Kyiv on Sunday.

Why does the US celebrate Labor Day on September 7th?

The United States celebrates Labor Day on the first Monday of September, and not on May 1st like most countries, due to the history of the American labor movement. The first celebration took place on September 5, 1882 in New York, organized by the Central Labor Union. In 1894, President Grover Cleveland made the date an official federal holiday. The reason for choosing September is linked to the fact that May 1st became associated with the events of the Haymarket Revolt in Chicago (1886) and with radical and socialist labor movements, which the US government preferred to avoid. Additionally, September helped fill the gap between Independence Day (July 4th) and Thanksgiving (November).
