There are still 35 thousand users without a family doctor in the Leiria Region

Diário de Leiria5 September 2026 at 12:00

The Local Health Unit (ULS) of the Leiria Region managed to significantly reduce the number of users without a family doctor, going from 120 thousand people in this situation to approximately 35 thousand. This improvement comes after the ULS took over the management of these users who did not have an assigned doctor.

The president of the ULS of the Leiria Region guaranteed that the region could be fully covered in terms of family doctors during the next year. This promise represents an ambitious goal for the local health unit.

The initial number of 120 thousand users without a family doctor was described as a legacy that the ULS had to face when it took on responsibility for the region. The reduction to 35 thousand represents significant progress in meeting the primary healthcare needs of the population.

Full coverage of the region in terms of family doctors would be an important milestone for the approximately 300 thousand inhabitants of the ULS of the Leiria Region's area of influence.

Why does the US celebrate Labor Day on September 7th?

The United States celebrates Labor Day on the first Monday of September, and not on May 1st like most countries, due to the history of the American labor movement. The first celebration took place on September 5, 1882 in New York, organized by the Central Labor Union. In 1894, President Grover Cleveland made the date an official federal holiday. The reason for choosing September is linked to the fact that May 1st became associated with the events of the Haymarket Revolt in Chicago (1886) and with radical and socialist labor movements, which the US government preferred to avoid. Additionally, September helped fill the gap between Independence Day (July 4th) and Thanksgiving (November).
