The Nepalese community in Coimbra will hold, this Saturday at 3:30 PM, a vigil in memory of the victims of the floods of August 26. The candle lighting ceremony will take place in front of the Santa Cruz church, at Praça 8 de Maio, in Baixa de Coimbra, organized by the "Nepal Cultural Community Coimbra". The initiative aims to pay tribute to the victims and demonstrate solidarity with the families affected by this tragedy.
The floods that hit the border region between Nepal and Tibet constituted a devastating natural catastrophe. The authorities updated the death toll, registering at least 1,295 dead and 4,898 missing on the Nepalese side, and 31 dead and 531 missing on the Chinese side, making over 1,300 deaths and more than 5,000 missing in total.
The promoters' statement justifies the vigil as a response to the tragedy that left people deceased, missing, and many families deeply affected. The Nepalese community in Coimbra intends, in this moment of grief, to come together to remember the lost lives and transmit a message of hope and solidarity to Nepal.
The organizers also invited local journalists and media professionals to attend, stating that their presence would give more meaning, dignity, and strength to this moment of solidarity.
