Director Daniel Vega, with 28 years of experience at the Guggenheim Bilbao, says the centre's international ambition "must start locally", seeking to create a space deeply rooted in the region but open to the world. The inaugural programme includes the exhibition "Masterpieces from the Banco Santander Collection", a show on Leonora Carrington (co-organised with the Freud Museum in London) and an exhibition of modern Mexican art from the Gelman Santander Collection. The centre also features "The Cube", a 360-degree immersive digital installation, and was designed by architect David Chipperfield, achieving BREEAM Outstanding certification with the highest score ever recorded for a museum. On first day of Rock in Rio only Foo Fighters used LED screen; decision is up to each artist, festival says

On the first day of Rock in Rio 2026, the new Mundo Stage, which features an LED screen of 104 meters in length and 2,400m² of screen area, was barely used by artists, with only the Foo Fighters, the headliner of the night, exploring the resource significantly at the beginning of the show, displaying a practically complete image on the screen that generated a positive reaction from the audience present. The festival stated that the decision to use or not use the screen is up to each artist, who would have freedom to play or experiment with the space. The other bands of the day, such as Nova Twins, The Hives, and Rise Against, did not use the resource in a significant way.
