Africa Will Gain the Dimension It Actually Has: UN Approves Change to World Map. USA Was Not Pleased

SOL4 September 2026 at 18:14

The United Nations Organization approved a resolution that may alter the way the world is represented geographically, allowing the African continent to be depicted with dimensions closer to its reality. The proposal was presented by Togo and aims to correct historical distortions in cartographic projections that have reduced the visual appearance of Africa.

The vote in the UN General Assembly resulted in a broad majority in favor of the resolution, with 164 countries supporting the change. Only the United States voted against, expressing its disagreement with this alteration to the world cartographic representation.

The decision does not impose on countries the obligation to change their official maps, but it establishes a precedent that may lead to the adoption of more accurate and fair geographic representations of the dimensions of continents.

This vote represents a significant step in the recognition that traditional cartographic projections, such as Mercator's, have historically diminished the visual importance of the African continent, contributing to a distorted perception of its actual size.
