Faro Santander, the new cultural centre of Fundación Banco Santander, opens on 8 September in Santander, Cantabria, to house the Banco Santander Collection, a collection built up over 160 years with works ranging from the Renaissance to contemporary art, including masters such as Titian, El Greco, Velázquez, Goya and Miró. Director Daniel Vega, with 28 years of experience at the Guggenheim Bilbao, says the centre's international ambition "must start locally", seeking to create a space deeply rooted in the region but open to the world. The inaugural programme includes the exhibition "Masterpieces from the Banco Santander Collection", a show on Leonora Carrington (co-organised with the Freud Museum in London) and an exhibition of modern Mexican art from the Gelman Santander Collection. The centre also features "The Cube", a 360-degree immersive digital installation, and was designed by architect David Chipperfield, achieving BREEAM Outstanding certification with the highest score ever recorded for a museum. Vega expresses openness to future partnerships with Portuguese institutions.
