The increase in tourism in the Pico da Vara area, in São Miguel, in the Azores, led to the requalification of the trail between Graminhais and Pico da Vara. The intervention sought to reconcile tourist use with biodiversity protection in the region.
SPEA – Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds reported on the work carried out on this trail, which crosses an area of great ecological value. The organization highlighted the importance of finding a balance between welcoming visitors and preserving the species that inhabit the site.
The Pico da Vara area has been experiencing a significant growth in visitors, which created the need to intervene in the trail infrastructure to ensure an adequate experience for tourists, while minimizing impacts on the natural environment.
