MPF requests TikTok to delete profiles that commercialize mercury

The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) requested TikTok to remove profiles that commercialize mercury destined for illegal mining. The video platform was notified to take down the accounts that advertise the substance, used clandestinely in mining activity.

More than 100 publications with mercury advertisements were detected on the platform. According to the survey conducted by the MPF, these publications accumulated millions of views, demonstrating the significant reach of illegal trade on the social network.

The commercialization of mercury for mining is considered an environmental crime in Brazil. The substance is highly toxic and causes severe damage to the environment and the health of communities affected by illegal mining activity.

TikTok has not yet commented officially on the MPF's request. The platform has a deadline to respond to the notification and take the necessary measures to curb illegal advertising on its application.
