A report from the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) indicates that the area burned this year in Portugal is the fifth highest of the decade. The document analyses the forest fires recorded during the period in question.
According to the report, about one third of the fires investigated this year had controlled burnings as their cause. This was the main cause identified among the fires analysed.
Arson appears as the second most frequent cause, representing 19% of the investigated cases. Reignitions complete the podium of the main origins of fires, corresponding to 9% of the total.
ICNF is the body responsible for preparing this report, which allows us to understand the distribution of causes of forest fires that affected the country this year.
