Civil Guard Points to a Direct Flame in the Las Peñas de Riglos Fire and the Prosecutor's Office Rules Out Recklessness

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General4 September 2026 at 21:08

The fire at Las Peñas de Riglos, in Aragon, destroyed more than 14,000 hectares, with its effects reaching as far as 18,000 hectares. This was one of the most devastating fires in the region.

The Central Operational Environmental Unit (UCOMA) of the Civil Guard concluded that the fire is "fully compatible" with the direct application of a flame on natural fuel. The investigators do not rule out that accelerants may have been used to make the spread of the flames much faster.

The Public Prosecutor's Office ruled out the hypothesis of recklessness as the cause of the fire. The investigation continues in order to determine the exact causes and those responsible for the fire.
