Former mayor of Gaia acquitted of prevarication and embezzlement: was accused of using municipal funds to watch FC Porto games

Record4 September 2026 at 20:17

The former mayor of Vila Nova de Gaia Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues was acquitted of the crimes of prevarication and embezzlement he was charged with. The PS politician led this municipal council between 2013 and 2025.

The prosecution argued that Rodrigues had used municipal funds to attend FC Porto football matches. The Public Prosecutor's Office had filed charges against the former mayor for these crimes.

During the trial, the court evaluated the evidence presented regarding the use of tickets and expenses allegedly made with public funds. The defense of the former mayor argued that there were no grounds for the charges.

With the acquittal decision, the court considered that the commission of the crimes for which Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues was suspected was not demonstrated. The case thus ended without conviction for the former mayor.
