Germans announce end of this car brand from Volkswagen Group that thousands of Portuguese drivers use

The European automotive industry is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by electrification, Asian competition, and the need to reduce costs. The German economic magazine WirtschaftsWoche reported, based on a confidential document prepared for Volkswagen's Supervisory Board, that the SEAT brand could disappear by the end of 2029, with production of current models ending progressively and resources concentrated on CUPRA. However, the company itself has clarified that no final decision has been made and that the brand remains an important part of the company, possessing a defined product plan for the coming years.

SEAT confirms it will continue to develop the already planned launches and updates, including new mild hybrid versions of the Ibiza and Arona, scheduled for 2027. The problem arises in the next product cycle, as increasingly stringent environmental regulations, electrification costs, and the investment needed to create a new generation of electric vehicles make it harder to justify new resources in the brand. The company assures, however, that it will continue to honor its commitments to customers, including assistance, warranties, and supply of parts.

CUPRA, created as an independent brand in 2018, became the main engine of growth and profitability for SEAT S.A., having surpassed one million automobiles sold since its launch. In 2025, CUPRA delivered 328,800 vehicles, up 32.5% from the previous year, while SEAT sold 257,400 units, a drop of 17%. The strategy until 2030 focuses on developing CUPRA's potential and increasing its presence in the European market.

The company clearly distinguishes the future of the SEAT brand from the future of SEAT S.A., which controls both SEAT and CUPRA. Even if the SEAT brand were to disappear, the company intends to maintain and strengthen industrial activity in Martorell, near Barcelona. This restructuring is integrated into the Volkswagen Group's Future Plan 2030, which aims to reduce the number of models marketed by up to 50% and decrease the complexity of available configurations by up to 75%.

Faced with the prospect of sharp rises in fuel prices, the Portuguese government decided to increase the ISP tax discount by about three cents per liter, with diesel expected to rise by about 12 cents to around 2.12 euros and 95 gasoline reaching 2.1 euros. Fears of inflation increases and global supply disruptions also sent debt interest rates soaring worldwide.
