ERSE must have "sanctioning authority" in the fuel market, indicates Environment Minister

RTP Notícias4 September 2026 at 20:10

The Minister of Environment, Maria da Graça Carvalho, sent a letter to the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE) requesting that this regulatory entity "deepen" its powers in the fuel sector. The objective is for ERSE to have the power to sanction those who violate the applicable legislation in this market.

In the letter sent to the regulator, the minister defended the need for greater transparency in fuel price formation. This request comes in the context of growing concerns about how prices are determined and communicated to consumers.

The position of the ministry indicates that ERSE should now have "sanctioning authority" in the fuel market, which would represent a significant expansion of its current attributions. This change would allow the regulator to apply sanctions to operators who do not comply with the sector's rules.

The initiative comes at a time when the government seeks to reinforce the mechanisms for monitoring and regulating the energy market, aiming to ensure greater protection for consumers and greater fairness in competition among the various operators in the sector.

Ibama authorizes Petrobras to expand activities in the Foz do Amazonas Basin

Ibama authorized on Thursday (4) Petrobras to expand drilling activities in the Foz do Amazonas Basin, on the Equatorial Margin. The operating license for block FZA-M-59 was amended to allow the drilling of three new wells off the coast of Amapá — Manga, PAD Morpho and Crotalus — completing the project originally planned in 2021, which called for up to four wells in the region. The decision, signed by the president of the environmental agency, Jair Schmitt, represents the full release of the state company's plan, after Ibama had granted in October 2025 only the license for the first Morpho well, keeping the others under review.
