UN approves new world map to better reflect Africa's size

SIC Notícias4 September 2026 at 18:54

The United Nations approved a resolution titled "Fix the Map", which aims to create a new world map that better reflects the true dimensions of the African continent. The resolution was approved by a large majority of 164 votes in favor.

The United States was the only country to vote against the resolution, while six countries abstained. The vote reflects a widespread recognition of the need to correct long-recognized cartographic distortions.

The resolution arises from the fact that, in current cartographic models, Greenland and Africa appear to have similar sizes. However, in reality, the African continent is 14 times larger than Greenland, representing one of the greatest geographical inaccuracies present in conventional world maps.

Rafael swapped Mallorca for Thailand with a pension of about 1,250 euros: "Here I can live well"

A retired Spanish man from Mallorca, Rafael Ruiz, moved to Thailand after concluding that his pension of about 1,250 euros did not allow him to maintain the desired lifestyle on the Spanish island, where the cost of housing and food had become incompatible with his retirement. He settled in Prachuap Khiri Khan with his Thai companion, paying only 100 euros per month in rent, which allowed him to live comfortably, dine out regularly, and travel around the country. However, in September 2025, he became seriously ill when his private health insurance had already ended, having to bear hospital expenses exceeding 1,300 euros and needing financial help from friends and strangers. Despite the difficulties, Rafael decided to remain in Thailand, and the article also includes practical guidance for Portuguese retirees who wish to take their pension abroad, warning about the risks of lacking health coverage, the need for complete insurance, and the tax and proof of life obligations from 2027.
