Jornal 3604 September 2026 at 13:46

A 78-year-old man who had been missing since August 31 was found alive on the morning of September 4 in Amarante, in a search operation involving GNR military personnel, drones, and canine teams. The man was located at 10:10 am on a dirt path situated in a forested area, thanks to the intervention of a Search and Rescue canine unit consisting of a military officer and the dog Arka, from the Territorial Command of Viseu.

The alert for the disappearance led the Territorial Detachment of Amarante to launch an operation involving various units of the territorial service and GNR intervention, including an Unmanned Aircraft System team from the Emergency Protection and Rescue Unit, responsible for the use of unmanned aerial assets.

After being located, the man was immediately assisted by the emergency medical services that were dispatched and subsequently transported to a hospital for evaluation of his condition. The operation ended with a positive outcome, allowing the man to be found alive four days after his disappearance.

The GNR highlighted the importance of coordination between the different units of the Guard in this type of operation, particularly emphasizing the contribution of canine units and drones in locating missing persons. In this case, it was the work of the Search and Rescue canine unit, with special mention of the dog Arka, that enabled the man to be located in a forested area of difficult access.
