The trial of Lindsay Clancy, 36, accused of killing her three children in the United States, reached an impasse after six days of jury deliberation, which failed to reach the unanimity required for a criminal verdict. Faced with the lack of agreement among the 12 jurors, Judge William Sullivan stated he intends to declare the trial a mistrial.
Before the formalization of the decision, defense attorney Kevin Reddington requested permission to file an emergency appeal with the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts, according to information released by the BBC network.
The crisis began when the jury sent a note to the judge stating that it continued to be unable to reach a unanimous decision. The message read: "With heavy hearts we have been unable to reach a decision and we will not be able to."
A day earlier, another communication had indicated that one of the jurors was not properly following the court's instructions, which worsened the situation and contributed to the impasse in the proceedings.
