The President of Argentina, Javier Milei, announced this Thursday that he will impose sanctions on companies that explore natural resources in the Falkland Islands, territory under British occupation whose sovereignty is claimed by Argentina. Milei also revealed that the South American country will build a naval military base on one of the continental points closest to the South Atlantic archipelago.
This decision comes after the President of the United States, Donald Trump, publicly declared that the US may review its position of neutrality on the conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom regarding the Falkland Islands.
Milei said he will prevent companies involved, directly or indirectly, in the exploration of natural resources on the islands under British administration from operating in Argentine territory.
The tension between the two countries has long existed since 1982, when Argentina and the United Kingdom fought a war for control of the islands, which ended with Argentina's defeat. The United Kingdom has since maintained the administration of the archipelago, while Argentina continues to claim sovereignty over the islands.
