The Regional Nucleus of Quercus warned about Madeira's excessive dependence on the exterior regarding food supply. The environmentalist association considers that this situation makes the Region extremely vulnerable to an eventual global food crisis.
According to Quercus, several factors contribute to worsening food insecurity, including climate change, international conflicts, and the predicted reduction in essential crop production worldwide.
The environmentalist organization criticized what it considers an "irrational bet" on golf, arguing that resources should be channeled to regional agricultural production. Quercus argues that investment in golf tourism should give way to a greater investment in local agriculture to guarantee food security for the Madeiran population.
The environmentalist association also expressed concern about the lack of action from the Regional Government on this matter, considering that there are no signs of a true concern for the food sustainability of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
