Government reinforces fuel 'discount' by three cents next week

Eco4 September 2026 at 15:38

The Portuguese Government will reinforce the discount on the Excise Duty on Petroleum Products (ISP) starting next week, cushioning by approximately three cents per liter the strong price rise expected for both diesel and gasoline. The measure was announced by Minister António Leitão Amaro at a press conference after the Council of Ministers, with the reinforcement being slightly higher for diesel and slightly lower for gasoline, already including VAT.

With this reinforcement, the set of ISP discounts totals 23 cents on diesel and gasoline, representing a support of 23 cents per liter for all Portuguese citizens. The minister stated that the increase in fuel prices concerns both the Portuguese people and the Government, referring to a "global impact".

Next week, diesel should increase by about 10.5 cents per liter, to values close to 2.12 euros, while 95 gasoline should reach approximately 2.1 euros after a rise of 8.5 cents. These increases represent a risk of gasoline having the biggest increase in four years.

Since the beginning of the attacks on Iran, the Executive has already adopted measures worth over 300 million euros to mitigate the impact of the fuel price escalation, including the ISP discount, the professional diesel support of ten cents, and the solidarity gas bottle.
